Is HR the most misunderstood profession?
Are we really that complicated?
Because, listen, sit me in front of an astrophysicist and I’ll glaze over quicker than ganache on a chocolate cake. But my job in HR? Rarely is it truly complicated. And let’s be honest, don’t we secretly love it when it is?
Let’s clear the air before anyone gets twitchy:
Yes, the legal framework can be tricky.
Yes, people are complex by nature.
No, this job is not easy, and I’m not here to diminish the sheer amount of emotional and intellectual labour HR requires.
But once that’s out of the way, I keep coming back to this: Do we really want to be understood? Or do we actually want something more powerful?
I think what we really want is to be valued.
To be recognised as the expert in the room. Not to have our every process dissected and fully understood, but to have our expertise trusted.
Being understood relies on someone else’s willingness to understand.
But you understanding you, that’s entirely within your control.
And I don’t mean “do you know your HR”, I know you know your HR 💪
I mean: Do you know YOU’RE HR?
Do you own your people superpowers?
Do you realise you see what others don’t, feel what others miss, hold space in ways most can’t?
Have you truly stepped into how magic and rare your gifts are?
Because that’s where your impact comes from. Not from convincing others you’re important. Not from waiting to be understood. Not from hoping someone will finally “get it.”
If deep down you still think you’re “just HR,” that belief will colour how you show up.
If you want people to really see you? Inspire them.
Don’t show up as a victim of misunderstanding. Show up as the empowered, brilliant HR professional you already are. The one who doesn’t need permission to be impactful.
Stop pinning your magic on whether others ‘get’ you, and go out and work it 🪄
That’s the energy that shifts careers.
Whether you’re speaking up in a meeting or quitting and starting fresh, show up bold. Show up like the expert you already are.
